Well into his fifth year at MASS, Thomas (Tom) is a Modelling Engineer within our Electronic Warfare (EW) team. Tom, a BSc. Mathematics (1st Class) graduate from University of York, is a proficient guitarist and a fishing enthusiast. Quite an interesting mix, right? That’s what we thought, so we decided to find out more about his journey here at MASS.
Mathematics Graduate in 2018 to EW specialist at MASS, tell us how that came about?
The simple answer is MASS came along. I was just back home from university and although I was working at a local business (in Ludborough) picking potatoes which was okay for me at the time, I wanted more. I wanted a career job related to what I studied. My job search led me to the Modelling Engineer role at MASS which was advertised on Indeed. I guess the real attraction came when I joined the company; it’s a proper company with good people and offered me what I needed at the time – an opportunity to build a career.
How would you describe your evolution here at MASS?
I’ve developed so much I think, I have a much better understanding of the industry and how my mindset as a Mathematician fits in with the work we do and where I can make a difference. I was part of the first cohort of the internal graduate training programme organised delivered by Live & Learn, so I picked up a lot of soft skills there too. I’d say the biggest development I’ve had in my time at MASS has come from the people I work with; I’ve learned a lot from people, like they say, it’s all about the people that surround you. There’s always someone who knows what you need to know.
What does a typical week at MASS look like for you?
Varied (one of the best things about it), working on numerous projects, fitting into any projects where technical expertise is required which keeps things interesting.
What have been your highlights here at MASS?
Being able to feed off and learn from some of the best minds in the industry – the knowledge depth is immense, and it’s been great to be around that. Aside from that, going out to customer sites to learn more about what they do has also been a highlight for me.
How do you see the future of EW and MASS’ place in it?
Inevitable; more security organisations are going to engage with it and see the value of it. MASS will always be at the centre of it (EW) especially because of our people. It’s a fast-moving space with new technology and bringing that technology into operations is the future. It’s going to be fun seeing it all come together.
